Postcard From Madeira
A short reflection on an unforgettable six days exploring this magical Portuguese island, situated closer to Africa than Europe.
Dear Reader,
Last week, I wrote about my favorite European summer destinations and I think I need to update that list to include Madeira. I’m here now and thought it would be fun to try a different format of post this week - a postcard from my travels!
Having fallen so deeply in love with this island, we were very close to extending our trip until the flight that we had our eye on became unavailable. As I sit here finalizing this post (writing this postcard to you) on our final morning, perched on our sunny terrace overlooking the little fishing village we’ve been staying in, having just gotten back from seeing the sunrise at Pico do Arieiro, I can’t help but already long to return. Madeira shared so much of her beauty with us over the past six days and I simply couldn’t wait to tell you about it.
There is still so much more to do - and next time, I hope to stay for longer. This magical, mystical place with its diverse microclimates, offers a wealth of experiences to be had and landscapes to be explored. In a sense, it feels as though you can experience multiple lives in a single day.
From hot sun to misty fog to rain. From black sand beaches to rocky coastlines with natural volcanic pools to waterfalls spilling off cliffs into the sea. From the fragrant and imposing UNESCO-protected laurel forest, to terraces of banana plants and grape vines, to majestic jagged peaks. From tangy poncha to fresh grilled seafood to succulent meats, and dishes and drinks accented with the flavors of banana and passion fruit. From the city of Funchal to seaside villages and mountain hamlets.
Some secrets are meant to be kept special and while I'm bursting to share every little magical detail of this island gem, for now, I shall hold back. However, if you're currently planning a trip and would like some recommendations, feel free to message me directly. I’d love to chat there!
Until next week,
Julianna x
P.S. Have you ever been to Madeira or is it still on your list? If you’ve been, I’d love to hear what you thought of it!
I literally heard of Madeira today and happened to stumble across this piece! Thank you for sharing about this magical place, I'm getting chills just reading about the magic you've experienced so far and adding it to my list ASAP! Looking forward to hearing more!
